BOSTON: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has strongly condemned the Lakhimpur Kheri incident that claimed the lives of four farmers in Uttar Pradesh.
At the same time, she stressed the need for restraining such incidents happening in the future anywhere in the country. Sitharaman, who is on a tour in the United States, took part in a discussion at the Harvard Kennedy School on Tuesday.
On this occasion, some people at the event raised questions about the incident in which Sitharaman was asked what she would say about the killings of and by the farmers.
They also put the finance minister in a tough spot by asking why the Prime Minister of the country Narendra Modi and other senior ministers directly questioned why the BJP did not open its mouth on the Lakhimpur Kheri incident and why it fell into self-defense.
In response, Sitharaman said that everyone was condemning the Lakhimpur Kheri incident and that similar incidents were taking place in other parts of the country as well.
“Everywhere you look today, the tide of protectionist sentiment is flowing. The BJP is in power in UP and there are allegations of involvement of the son of a Union Minister so everyone is pointing us. Whoever did this work will be known in court. All this is not to say that I am lagging behind our Prime Minister but our party. I will talk about India. I will talk about justice for the poor, ”Sitharaman replied.
