The life of another genius has ended tragically. McAfee Anti-Virus creator John McAfee has reportedly committed suicide.
McAfee, who was facing tax evasion charges in the United States, has been serving a prison sentence in Spain since October last year. In October 2020, when he was about to fly to Istanbul, he was detained in Barcelona airport.
Due to his numerous consultancy gigs, cryptocurrencies, and selling his life’s rights, McAfee yet failed to file tax returns from 2014 to 2018. He appears to have committed suicide in his room on Wednesday.
Seventy-five-year-old McAfee is known as an American technology entrepreneur. Antivirus software McAfee was invented in the ’80s and caught everyone’s attention. However, he is accused of tax evasion in Tennessee and cryptocurrency fraud in New York.
Earlier on Wednesday, the National Court of Spain confirmed its extradition to the United States in relation to the tax evasion case had been accepted. The ruling might still be appealed, and the Spanish cabinet should have approved the extradition.
According to the US extradition request filed in November and mentioned in the judgment, McAfee earned almost ten million euros ($12 million) in the four-year time limit but never submitted a tax return.
“To cover his revenue and assets. The defendant ordered that some of his income be paid and placed in his name via straw persons.” The lawyer argued.
He is thought to have committed suicide at the time. ‘There is a possibility of going for an appeal. Society has taken revenge on him, ” his lawyer, Xavier, told the media.
McAfee sold his company to Intel in 2011. After that, he stayed away from business and enjoyed his luxurious life.
Although McAfee did not have a simple life, In 2012, his neighbor was murdered, and McAfee became the primary suspect at the time; he was bought in for questioning but later was let go without any charges. McAfee also had allegations of encouraging drug use.
He also actively sought a nomination to run for the United States president from the Liberation party from 2016 to 2020, but being on tax evasion charges did not do him much of a favor.
In June last year, McAfee took to his Twitter saying, ” hidden crypto. I wish I did,” referring to the US authorities believing he had hidden cryptocurrencies.
He also declared himself as a cryptocurrency guru, claiming he made $ 2000 per day. He also had one million followers on Twitter.
Following his death in prison, his fans are upset that the life of a genius has ended so tragically.
