Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi has narrowly escaped an assassination attempt. Authorities said Kadimi’s residence was attacked by armed drones early Sunday morning. The drone attack left his house seriously distracted. But authorities confirmed that Mustafa Al-Kadhimi was safe.
The latest incident seems to have fueled tensions over the pro-Iranian militia’s rejection of last month’s parliamentary election results.
The incident took place in the Green Zone area, which has the highest security arrangements with government offices and embassies.
Two officials, who did not want to be named, told the Associated Press that seven Kadhimi security personnel were injured in an attack by two drones loaded with explosives on the prime minister’s residence.

“By the grace of God, I and my people are safe,” Prime Minister Kadhimi said on Twitter after the attack. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The United States, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates have condemned the drone strike on the Iraqi prime minister.
Parliamentary elections were held in the country on October 10. The UN Security Council also welcomed the election. Iranian-backed militia groups have been pitching tents near the Green Zone to protest the recount.
Pro-Iranian parties’ expectations flipped upside down. They lost many seats, which were unexpected as they were presuming to take over the government. Since then, their supporters have been protesting the results, holding demonstrations outside Baghdad’s secure Green Zone and demanding that votes be manually recounted.
Moqtada al-Sadr, a Shia Muslim cleric, declared victory after his party won the most seats. He is advocating for a government free of foreign interference, which includes both Iran and the West. He wants Tehran’s influence over Iraq’s internal affairs to end.
And the drone attack looks like a warning to the formation of the government. Leaders from all around the world including Joe Biden have criticized the heinous attack.
Biden said he heavily criticize the act and was also relieved that the prime minister was safe. He has also instructed US forces to assist Iraq’s officials in finding the people behind the act.
