The Covid-19 pandemic is teaching us all about a healthy lifestyle. Along with the sanitization process ongoing, we need to consider ‘immunity booster’ in our checklist.

How do we do that?

Will this be a tough one? Do I have to go to the medical stores for stocking up multivitamins and minerals? Going out will be another task of masking and sanitizing. Too much to do..

No, not at all we need to move to our Kitchen and explore it well.

Indian household kitchen holds all the ingredients that can help us boost up our immunity.

All we need to do is identify them and use them in the right way that gives us the maximum benefit.

  • Water: Drinking an adequate amount of water as per our body’s requirement is the basic step to have a well-hydrated body. Water has many beneficial minerals in it that maintain the proper base of our body and also helps in metabolism. Besides, water helps in regulating proper body temperature and ensures proper digestion.

  • Lemon & Honey: Let’s add up some more spirit to water. Lemon is an excellent source of vitamin C and antioxidants, which are very much essential to boost up our immunity. Vitamin C also helps our body to easily absorb iron from iron-rich foods.       
  • The phytonutrients present in honey are responsible for its antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant properties. Thus, they are considered to be very effective for immune-boosting and anticancer benefits.

By squeezing half a lemon and adding honey to lukewarm water and drinking it regularly every morning may boost up our immunity.

Cinnamon: The common yet most powerful spice of Indian household.

It has innumerable medicinal properties. Cinnamon is loaded with antioxidants that protect and limit our body damage caused by free radicals. It also has anti-inflammatory benefits that help our body to fight against infections and tissue damage.

Adding cinnamon sticks or powder to a cup of warm black tea or just to warm water with honey as the sweetener if needed, can make an incredibly healthy hot beverage option.

Turmeric: Turmeric is the basic Indian spice that is used in almost all Indian curries. This bright yellow spice has many medicinal benefits.

It is high in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, and are used for treating Hay fever, osteoarthritis, depression, controlling cholesterol levels, skin damage.

The chemical curcumin present in turmeric adds to its anti-inflammation properties, thus making it good as an immune booster.

We do have turmeric in almost all our curries, but to rip out maximum benefit as daily intake we can have it has turmeric tea and turmeric milk. Boil water with grounded turmeric or powdered turmeric. Once it cools down you may add honey and lemon to it.

Turmeric milk is an age-old medicine for us, add grounded or powdered turmeric to warm milk, and drink it preferably before sleep. This will add wonders to your health in many ways.

Ginger: Ginger is being used as a traditional medicine from a long back time now. Gingerol is the main compound present in Ginger, responsible for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It is very much effective against harmful oral bacterial infection and viral respiratory infections. Apart from this, it has anti-cancer properties due to 6-gingerol present in ginger and may be effective in controlling cancer. It also helps in lowering cholesterol levels, help in digestion, maintaining blood sugar level, and reducing problems of osteoarthritis. 

We do add ginger in many of our meals, we may also have this powerful root as Ginger Tea. Adding crushed ginger to tea can relieve sore throat, enhance the taste of the tea, and add the medicinal benefits as well.

Black Pepper: Black pepper is another staple seasoning from our kitchen.

The active compound piperine present in black pepper makes it a good source of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory assets. It also has anti-microbial properties that help to fight cold and flu, respiratory infections, prevent chest congestion, and help to boost up our immunity.

We do have black pepper as a seasoning on our food, we may also add it to Ginger tea or honey lemon tea to make these drinks much more powerful.

Clove: Clove is another spice that contains fiber, minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants in it, thus making it a very powerful spice. The Manganese present in the clove is very high which helps in brain function and strengthening bones. Clove oil has been used traditionally in Chinese and ayurvedic medicines due to its anti-inflammatory properties.

This is a go-to spice in many of our dishes, we can also get its benefit by adding it to tea and may also take it with honey.
