In a heartfelt farewell, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi recently penned an emotional note to the people of Wayanad, expressing his deep gratitude for their unwavering support during challenging times. Having vacated his Wayanad Lok Sabha seat, Rahul Gandhi took a moment to reflect on the bond he shared with his constituents, highlighting their role as his steadfast refuge amidst political turbulence.
Rahul Gandhi’s political journey saw him contesting and winning two seats in the Lok Sabha elections—Wayanad in Kerala and Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh. According to election rules, he had to vacate one of these seats within 14 days of the results announcement on June 4. Opting to retain Rae Bareli, a traditional stronghold for the Gandhi family, Rahul Gandhi bid adieu to Wayanad, a decision accompanied by a poignant message to the people who had stood by him.
In his note, Rahul Gandhi reminisced about the inclusive and affectionate welcome he received from Wayanad, transcending political, communal, and linguistic barriers. He expressed how their unconditional love shielded him from the daily barrage of criticism he faced. “You embraced me with unbridled love and affection. It didn’t matter which political formation you supported, which community you belonged to, which religion you believed in, or which language you spoke,” he wrote, underscoring the profound connection he felt with the diverse community.
The note also conveyed his sorrow at leaving the Wayanad seat, tempered by the reassurance that his sister, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, would be there to carry forward his legacy. Rahul Gandhi expressed confidence in Priyanka’s ability to serve the people of Wayanad with dedication and excellence. “I am confident that she will do an excellent job of being your MP if you decide to give her the opportunity,” he stated, entrusting his sister with the responsibility of representing Wayanad in the upcoming bypoll.
This bypoll, scheduled for later this year, will mark Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s electoral debut, adding a new chapter to the Gandhi family’s political saga. As Rahul Gandhi steps back from Wayanad, his note serves as a testament to the enduring relationship he forged with its people—a relationship built on mutual respect, love, and unwavering support.
