A local court has convicted ex-police officer Derek Chauvin, the prime accused in the murder of George Floyd, who created a sensation in the United States. The verdict was handed down on Tuesday.

A jury of seven women and five men of mixed race convicted him in three cases. Crimes such as Second-Degree Murder, Third-Degree Murder, and suffocation have been proven.

Against this background, Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill found Derek guilty and handed down a unanimous verdict. Derek Chauvin may face up to 40 years in prison under local law.

On May 25 last year in Minneapolis, Derek Chauvin, a white American police officer, arrested George Floyd on counterfeit but he put the African-American man on the pavement with his knee on his neck, even with George Floyd’s pleading “I can’t breathe” Chauvin remained cold and still and chocked George Floyd to death.

 Demands were mounting to hang Chauvin immediately. A case was registered against Chauvin and three other officers who assisted him in the crime. The Minneapolis chief was quick to say it was a murder and immediately suspended all four officers. Now with Chauvin convicted the three other police officers will face the trial in August.

Almost a month ago Chauvin was charged with murder and the Minneapolis authority came forward and offered $27 million to George Floyd’s family as settlement.

However, the court on Tuesday convicted the main accused, Derek Chauvin. He was handcuffed immediately after the verdict.

Security was tightened on the court premises the whole city was on the edge not only for this case but the recent police shoot out of a black man Dante Wright on April 11 stirred the riots once again.

America is really not having a good year ever since George Floyd’s death there have been many mass shootouts targeting Asian-Americans, police assassinating black African-Americans.
