China Has Announced A Three-Child Policy, In The Latest Major Policy Shift

The ruling Communist Party of China has taken a key policy decision as the birth rate in the country continues to fall.

Population growth in China has slowed down after decades of strict enforcement of the single-child policy.

With a two-children limit in 2016, China abolished its decades-old one-child policy – originally imposed to put an end to a population explosion – which has failed to lead to a sustained rise in births, because of the high cost of child-raising in Chinese cities obligated many couples from beginning families. Having two children was “financially burdensome” according to Chinese people.

But China went ahead and took another major step forward, announcing that a couple can have up to three children.

At the beginning of this month, the once-in-a-decade census in China showed that in the recent decade after the 1950s, the populations have increased at a slower pace with a fertility rate of 1.3 children per woman for 2020 alone equivalent to aging civilizations such as Japan and Italy.

The birth rate has been the lowest consistently for the fourth year in a row. Which raised concern in the government circles about the significant decline in the number of able-bodied workers in China, the world’s most populous country and the world’s second-largest economy.

With this, the President, the leader of the Communist Party (CPC) Jinping decided to set aside the family planning policy followed so far and allow the couple to have a third child as well.

“The Chinese government will encourage couples to have a third child,” the official news agency Xinhua reported, as determined by the CPC Political Bureau under President Jinping. The conference noted that China’s population will increase with the stimulus measures needed to implement this policy.

The Xinhua news agency conducted an online survey to ask Weibo users whether they wished to have a third child. In less than half an hour, the survey received more than 300,000 responses, of which 90% indicated that they are absolutely not considering but the survey did not last long for some reason it was discontinued.
